Hello, stranger!

This is the -temporary- website of the installation artwork Hello, stranger!. If you're looking for the old website that was previously at dreams.hku.nl click here.
Hello, stranger! is an installation that shows two worlds connected as a möbius strip: Dream and Reality. In Hello, stranger! you enter the surreal constructions of the both realities. While interacting with the two worlds a subtle interaction flow takes place between strangers. Touching the end of one world is reaching into the other, how do you know where one ends and the other begins?
Hello, stranger! is produced as a graduation artwork in 2007 as part of the EMMA (European Media Masters of Arts) course at the Utrecht School of the Arts, Hilversum.

Hello, stranger! is a project by
Sanneke Prins, interactive concept and design
David Hartono, technical development and design

Thesis: A true dream is real

As part of this project Sanneke wrote the thesis A true dream is real.
This thesis give insight in the analysis of dreams and the construction of reality as the basis for a model for immersive interactive narrative artworks.

In the thesis that is created in collaboration with the project Sanneke researches the similarities and differences between dream, the postmodern construction of reality and interactive narrative productions. The analysis of Freuds dream work and the construction of reality according to among others Jean Baudrillard leads to a model for interactive narratives that shows a remarkable resemblance to the möbius stip.

Thesis conclusion
All analyses in this thesis lead us to conclude that dreams, reality and interactive narratives are made of the same stuff. All of them are constructions of linguistic processes in which we try to assign meaning.
They are essentially, pure poetry. All analyses in this thesis lead us to conclude that dreams, reality and interactive narratives are made of the same stuff. All of them are all constructions of linguistic processes in which we try to assign meaning.

Some quotes:
“The very definition of the real has become: that of which it is equivalent reproduction...
The real is not only what can be reproduced, but that which is always already reproduced. The hyperreal... which is entirely in simulation.” Jean Baudrillard

“Dream is not a revelation. If a dream affords the dreamer some light on himself, it is not the person with closed eyes who makes the discovery but the person with open eyes lucid enough to fit thoughts together. Dream—a scintillating mirage surrounded by shadows—is essentially poetry.” Michel Leiris
